Some cases of systemic lupus erythematosus, minimal change nephrotic syndrome, polyarteritis nodosa, connective tissue disease of different etiology, temporal arteritis; usually in combination with adrenaline in anaphylaxis; hypersensitivity reactions to drugs or chemicals, transfusion reactions, insect bites, Stevens-Johnson syndrome; acute graft or transplant rejection reactions. In rheumatology, as secondary therapy for short-term administration in severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic osteoarthritis, synovitis, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, acute rheumatic carditis.

In endocrinology, in primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency and adrenogenital syndromes only if supplemented with mineralocorticoid therapy; in surgery, severe stress or trauma in case of diminished or doubtful adrenocortical function. It is also used in the treatment of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, idiopathic immunogranulocytopenia (agranulocytosis), acute or chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, advanced myeloma refractory to alkylating agents; for palliative treatment in terminal stages of neoplastic disease.

It is also indicated in the case of cerebral edema, particularly those forms due to brain tumors, brain abscesses and neurosurgical interventions.
