Description
Praziquantel is an anthelmintic with a broad spectrum of activity against trematodes (Schistosoma haematobium, S. intercalatum, S. japonicum, S. mansoni, S. mattheei, S. mekongi, Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini, O. felineus, Paragonimus westermani, P. heterotremus, P. africanus, P. uterobilateralis and Paragonimus spp) and cestodes (Taenia saginata, T. solium, Hymenolepis nana and Diphyllobothrium latum).
Praziquantel is indicated for the treatment of cysticercosis (parenchymal and subarachnoid neurocysticercosis, and visceral and cutaneous cysticercosis), and intestinal fluke infections (fasciolopsiasis, heterophiasis, metagonimiasis and nanofietiasis), hepatic (clonysorcisoliasischiasis), and paragoniasis and paragoniasischiasis .
It is the drug of choice to treat schistosomiasis, since it is effective against all species of schistosomes.
