Description
Dicloxacillin is a semi-synthetic drug derived from 6-aminopenicillanic acid. It is an acid-resistant and penicillinase-resistant antibiotic, so it can be administered orally. These antibiotics are primarily bactericidal at therapeutic concentrations.
It is indicated in: Tonsillitis, Pharyngitis, Bronchitis, Bronchopneumonias, Pneumonias of multiple foci, even in their serious complications such as Empyema, Pioneumothorax with or without Pneumatoceles and lung abscesses caused by Staphylococcus aureus including penicillinase producers. It is also indicated in a wide variety of skin and soft tissue infections such as: Impetigo, Bullous Impetigo, Furunculosis, Pyodermitis, Cellulitis, Hidradenitis, Escalating Skin Syndrome (Lyell Syndrome and Ritter’s Disease) and Staphylococcus infected wounds. Also, in Septic Arthritis, Osteomyelitis and Pyomyositis.
Although the main indication for dicloxacillin is the treatment of infections due to penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus, it can be used in the initial treatment of patients in whom a staphylococcal infection is suspected before obtaining the antibiogram. In severe life-threatening infections, oral penicillinase-resistant penicillin preparations should not be considered for initial treatment.
