Description
Clarithromycin is a medium-spectrum macrolide antibiotic, specific bactericide for the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections, caused by different bacterial species, such as:
• Upper respiratory infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis).
• Lower respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia).
• Skin and soft tissue infections (folliculitis, cellulitis, erysipelas, impetigo, abscesses).
• Disseminated or localized infections by the Mycobacterium complex (MAC), consisting of Mycobacterium avium and M. intracellulare. Localized infections due to M. chelonae, M. fortuitum or M. kansasii.
• Clarithromycin is indicated for the prevention of
the spread of MAC infection in HIV-infected patients with CD4 counts <per 100 / mm3.
• It is also indicated in the presence of acid suppression for the eradication of H. pylori, resulting in a decrease in the recurrence of duodenal ulcer.
