Description
Rosuvastatin, an inhibitor of the enzyme 3-Hydroxy-3-Methyl-Glutaryl Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, is a lipid-lowering drug used in conjunction with lifestyle modifications, such as adhering to a healthy diet and regular exercise, in order to lower the concentrations of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (Apo B) and triglycerides, as well as to increase the levels of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) in the treatment of hyperlipidemias in patients adults, including:
• Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments (LDL apheresis).
• Familial hyperlipoproteinemia type 3.
• Primary hypercholesterolemia (familial and non-familial heterozygous) and mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson types IIa and IIb).
• Hypertriglyceridemia.
Likewise, rosuvastatin is indicated for the treatment of pediatric patients aged 10-17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-C and Apo B when lifestyle modifications are not sufficient.
