Description
Metformin is indicated as the main treatment in patients with type II diabetes mellitus, especially in those with refractory obesity whose hyperglycemia is due to an ineffective action of insulin. Another indication for its administration is in combination with sulfonylureas, in non-insulin dependent diabetics in whom treatment with sulfonylurea alone is inappropriate. Metformin may be the drug of choice when there are primary or secondary failures in response to oral hypoglycemic medications, particularly in patients with a tendency to gain weight.
Metformin can be used in combination with the administration of exogenous insulin, for the treatment of patients with type II diabetes mellitus who have not responded positively to the therapy of other oral agents; with which a better glycemic control is achieved as well as a decrease in insulin requirements.
Metformin can be given as monotherapy or in combination with a sulphonylurea or insulin.
