Description
Amlodipine is indicated in the initial treatment of hypertension and can be used as a single agent for the control of blood pressure in most patients. Those patients who are not adequately controlled with a single antihypertensive may benefit from adding amlodipine, which has been used in combination with thiazide diuretics, beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agents, or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.
Amlodipine is indicated for the first-line treatment of myocardial ischemia, either due to fixed obstruction (stable angina) and / or vasospasm / vasoconstriction (Prinzmetal variant angina) of the coronary vessels.
Amlodipine can be used in those cases in which the initial clinical picture suggests a possible vasopastic / vasoconstrictor component, but this fact has not been confirmed.
Amlodipine can be used alone as monotherapy or in combination with another antianginal drug in patients with angina, which is refractory to nitrates or to adequate doses of beta-blockers.
