Description
Suppressive treatment and acute attacks of malaria, due to infection with P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale and susceptible strains of P. falciparum. It is also indicated for the treatment of extraintestinal amebiasis.
Indications:
ARALEN is used for the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by Plasmodium species. It is also prescribed for certain autoimmune conditions, including:
- Malaria (prevention and treatment of acute episodes)
- Rheumatoid arthritis (for reducing inflammation)
- Lupus erythematosus (to manage symptoms)
Dosage:
- For malaria prevention: Typically taken weekly, starting 1-2 weeks before travel and continuing for 4 weeks after exposure.
- For malaria treatment: The dosing schedule varies based on the severity of the infection, typically given as a loading dose followed by maintenance doses.
- For rheumatoid arthritis and lupus: Dosage is individualized based on medical advice.
It is recommended to take ARALEN with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Mechanism of Action:
Chloroquine works by inhibiting the growth of the malaria parasite and reducing inflammation. It interferes with the parasite’s ability to digest hemoglobin in red blood cells, preventing its replication. In autoimmune diseases, it helps modulate the immune response.
Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to chloroquine or other 4-aminoquinoline drugs
- Retinal or visual field changes caused by previous chloroquine use
- Pregnancy (especially during the first trimester, unless prescribed by a doctor)
Side Effects:
- Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and skin rash
- Serious: Retinal damage (with prolonged use), heart rhythm disturbances, liver problems, and severe allergic reactions
Storage:
Store at room temperature (20-25°C), away from moisture and light.
Note:
ARALEN should be taken under medical supervision to monitor for potential side effects, particularly during long-term use for autoimmune conditions. Regular eye exams may be recommended for those on prolonged therapy.
