Description
DABEX® is indicated in adults and children from 10 years of age for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes), especially in obese patients, in whom caloric restriction and physical activity are not sufficient to control plasma glucose levels.
DABEX® is also indicated in primary failures and / or secondary to other oral hypoglycemic agents. In adults, DABEX® can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other hypoglycemic agents.
Because the mechanism of action of DABEX® does not involve insulin secretion and improves insulin resistance, it can be used in combination with exogenous administration of this hormone for the treatment of diabetic patients who do not respond to therapy with oral agents and which therefore require the administration of insulin. Several studies indicate that this combination has achieved better glycemic control, as well as a decrease in the insulin requirement; both in children over ten years of age and in adults.
In patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin dependent), DABEX® can play the role of adjuvant, improving metabolic control, mainly in cases that require insulin doses greater than 1.5 U / kg / day.
Due to its beneficial effect on insulin resistance, metformin has been used in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients with prediabetes and at least one additional risk factor, in whom lifestyle modifications alone have not allowed adequate glycemic control to be achieved.
