Description
The indications for metronidazole are based on its antiprotozoal and antibacterial activity, as well as its pharmacokinetic characteristics. These indications are taken according to clinical studies carried out with metronidazole and its position in the currently available list of anti-infective and anti-parasitic drugs.
Metronidazole is indicated for the treatment of infections or infestations caused by microorganisms identified as sensitive:
• Amebiasis.
• Urogenital trichomoniasis.
• Nonspecific vaginitis.
• Giardiasis.
• Curative treatment of medical-surgical infections caused by sensitive anaerobic bacteria.
• Preventive treatment of infections caused by sensitive anaerobic bacteria in surgical patients at high risk for this type of infection.
• Follow-up curative or prophylactic treatment after parenteral regimens for infections caused by sensitive anaerobic bacteria.
